Since 1981, the City of Karlsruhe has operated a sewage sludge incineration plant at its main WWTP, comprising two redundant incineration lines (Line no. 1 and Line no. 2), permitted for up to 20,000 t of dry solids per year. After around 20 years of reliable operation, Line no. 2 required fundamental renewal. In January 2010, TBF + Partner AG was commissioned with the general planning for the refurbishment, carried out while Line no. 1 remained in operation.

Scope included refurbishment of the fluidised-bed furnace, steam heat exchanger and sludge dewatering plant, replacement of the polymer dosing, sludge dryer, thermal plant, demineralisation and auxiliary power systems, a new turbine, and renewal of process control and flue gas wastewater treatment.
