Pedestrian crossing Oberdorf, Mettmenstetten – a variant study
Mettmenstetten, Switzerland
Following the removal of the pedestrian crossing at Albisstrasse 54/47 in Mettmenstetten due to safety deficiencies, a petition for its restoration was submitted to the municipal administration. On behalf of the Civil Engineering Office of the Canton of Zurich, TBF examined various designs for the pedestrian crossing on the cantonal road as part of a feasibility study. For each design, the overall compliance with road and transport engineering (VSS) standards and cantonal requirements were ensured, and pedestrian traffic relationships and sight distances were analysed to assess the safety of individual designs. TBF created CAD drawings including Swept Path Analyses for each of the 11 developed variants and executed a feasibility assessment. The results of the variant study were summarized in a traffic engineering report and an evaluation matrix. In conclusion, TBF recommends the immediate construction of a speed cushion at the intersection of the former pedestrian crossing as well as colouring the road surface to visually delineate designated uses of the roadway surface, while maintaining a speed limit of 50 km/h.
